2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 VS 2023 Subaru Solterra
Which New Electric SUV Should I Buy?
There are many Electric Vehicles starting production. While they may look similar on the outside, they vary quite a bit under the hood, or rather under the chassis, where the batteries are located. Hyundai has dabbled in the EV market a bit, introducing their new IONIQ 5 into the mix. Meanwhile, the Subaru Solterra is the brand's first electric vehicle, and it comes standard with all-wheel drive. Subaru and Toyota collaborated to build the platform for this small SUV, which will also underlie the Toyota bZ4X and other future vehicles.

Overview & Electric Motors
Hyundai IONIQ 5
The Ioniq 5 features an electric motor that comes in a variety of capacities. It starts at $39,950 MSRP. The standard-range battery produces 168 horsepower when combined with a single rear-mounted electric motor. The rear-drive system delivers 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which will propel the Ioniq 5 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds with the longer-range battery. With 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque, the all-wheel-drive variant is both more powerful and faster. Hyundai created an incredibly smooth driving sensation with every bit of comfort in mind. Its wide tires paired with a low center of gravity makes it agile, quick, and fun to drive.
Subaru Solterra
The Solterra starts at $44,995 MSRP. The Subaru Solterra boasts an all-wheel-drive system with two electric motors producing 215 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque combined. The power may be distributed differently based on the driving mode, which has four options: Eco, Normal, Power, and X-mode, which helps in slick situations or on uneven terrain by adjusting the power to each wheel individually. The Solterra has 8.3 inches of ground clearance and a "Grip Control" option, which is effectively a low-speed cruise control, for those interested in using it off-road. The regenerative-braking force may be adjusted using the paddles on the steering wheel.

Ones with 18-inch wheels are said to have a range of 228 miles, while models with 20s are said to have a range of 222 miles. Subaru claims that the Solterra's internal 6.6-kWh charger can recharge the battery in nine hours when plugged into a Level 2 charging station. If you connect it to a 100-kW DC fast charger, an 80-percent charge should take around 56 minutes.
