What’s New for the 2018 Hyundai Elantra?
Last year, for the 2017 model year, Hyundai released the long-awaited debut of the sixth-generation Elantra. With major changes across the board, it was the biggest upgrade to the Hyundai Elantra since 2011. The 2018 Hyundai Elantra, in comparison, is a smaller recalibration of the new designs, with some trim levels getting new standard features and improved availability, while others are adjusted to fit better with the car’s overall design scheme. Among the former is the Hyundai Elantra Sport, which was introduced in limited numbers halfway through the 2017 model run. For 2018, the model has full availability, as well as getting additional comfort and safety features as standard equipment. That includes a moonroof and a blind-spot monitoring, lane departure and rear cross traffic alert. The entry-level SE trim, on the other hand, sees itself split into two, with the SE forming the new base while the SEL becomes the equivalent of the SE with the Popular Equipment Package. This model also gets the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard, along with the lane departure monitor.
The biggest news for the 2018 Elantra, however, is the rollout of the all-new and fully-redesigned Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback. Redesigned together with the Elantra, the new Elantra GT was not ready on time for a 2017 model year debut, and as such sees its grand entrance into the United States market this year. From the outside, the new Elantra GT is much more similar to the sedan model in its styling, featuring the same hexagonal grille design and flared corners. While the new Elantra GT shares much of its styling and options with the Elantra sedan, unlike many other manufacturers’ hatchbacks it is built around a different platform, with weight distribution and body rigidity optimized for a hatchback. This gives the new Elantra GT some advantages in applying the new Elantra technology that the sedan pioneered last year. For example, the base engine is the same on both vehicles, but is tuned up to 162 horsepower in the Elantra GT. Unlike the previous generation, where the Elantra GT offered only a single trim line, the 2018 Elantra GT offers a choice of two – the base Elantra GT and a more upscale Elantra GT Sport, which includes the more powerful 201-horsepower engine that is also available on the higher-end Elantra sedan models. This offers buyers additional customization options, making it easy to purchase an Elantra that is equipped exactly the way you like it.
